This painting contains a specific message which can be read in the inscription on the mantelpiece to the right. ‘Soo d’Oude Songen, Soo Pypen de Jonge’ (As the Old Sing, So Pipe the Young) – children do what their parents do, even when they are set a bad example, as is here.
